Wessen ist sich Bewusstsein bewusst? (What is consciousness aware of?)

Throughout history, the manifestation of our universe has been pondered, and interestingly many of the most time-honored of those theories come to similar conclusions. It is expressed in Shamanism as, “This is all a dream.” Hindu philosophy refers to this world as “maya,” or illusion. The ancient Vedic seers similarly claim, “This is all just a play of consciousness.” These ancient philosophies go on to say that the entire manifest universe is born of, and sustained by, consciousness. Consciousness, from within its own inherent nature, gives birth to the structure of the entire universe.

Since consciousness is all that exists, an essential question comes to mind: What is it that we know about consciousness? At first glance, it may seem self-evident to say that consciousness, by its very own nature, is conscious, is aware. But with a little further reflection about the Big Bang Theory and the manifestation of existence, we are prompted to ask another question: “Before anything existed, what could consciousness possibly have been conscious of?” Remember, we are speaking here of a time that existed before time and of a place that existed before space. It was a time of no “thing-ness,” pure nothingness. Consciousness could be viewed then as pure “is-ness” before anything actually was. So what could consciousness possibly become conscious of? The only thing that existed – itself.

Consciousness, by its own nature, became conscious… of itself.

„Ich denke, also bin ich” (“I think therefore I am”)

Schauen Sie um sich: Was sehen Sie? Was hören Sie? Was fühlen Sie? Was ist Ihre Erfahrung in genau diesem Moment?

1641 schrieb Descartes „Cogito ergo sum” – „Ich denke, also bin ich”.

„Ich denke, also existiert Bewusstsein”.

“I think therefore I am”

Look around you right now. What do you see? What do you hear? What do you experience in this very moment? How do you know any of it is real? If you’re totally honest with yourself: How do you know it is not just an illusion, like in the movie “The Matrix”?

The question is: What do you really know? In 1641 Descartes wrote “I think therefore I am”. Maybe it’s more honest to say “I think, therefore I think I am”. The only thing that’s irrefutable is that you are conscious. Your thoughts and experiences may be an illusion, but they are without doubt thoughts. They are consciousness. Maybe everything you are conscious of is an illusion, but one thing is for sure: Consciousness is.
