I remember watching a Buddhist practitioner being interviewed on television.  She insisted that she had no fear of death.  “I am ready to die right now, no problem,” she claimed.

It struck me as a very sad state of affairs.  It seemed to me she had contorted the teachings of Buddhism.  As an overlay, she convinced herself that being spiritual meant having no fear of death.

I only hope that if the moment ever really came, fear of death would inspire her to swerve her car or dodge a bullet.  That is only natural.

Isn’t it incredible that overlays can become so consuming as to override even the most fundamental natural instincts?
